Description

Set in the midst of the Roaring Twenties and the Golden Age of Hollywood, this full production script of Queen/King Lear features many female leads and supporting roles. The show opens with a press conference as star of the Shakespearean stage and Hollywood darling Regina Lear divides up her assets among her daughters in order to enjoy life without its responsibilities.

Run time without intermission approximately 56 minutes

Minimum casting is 13 roles with a maximum of 24 speaking parts and as many non-speaking roles as desired (breakdowns and doubling included in full product with some included in the preview). It is the director’s choice to stage this with a smaller number of talented actors who can double and triple OR use this play as a vehicle for maximum participation.

Included are the script, director’s and production notes, graphics costuming suggestions, discussion questions for rehearsal to assist actors to get into character and communicate the play in its entirety to the audience and permission to produce without paying royalties. Production notes include suggestions for a minimal set. (PDF’s in Zip folder) The discussion questions are suitable for classroom study as well as for production preparation. Production notes include a separate .PDF for a stage manager that breaks down props, costume changes, light and sound cues by scene.

This was our last play performed in person in 2019 and I am still hearing back from families and students how much they loved this production. Our cast happened to be an all female cast of 16 6th-8th graders of various levels in reading/writing and acting experience. We did omit the guns and improvised ways for the audience to be aware of what happened via sound effects and off stage line delivery, etc. The students performed off book and helped curate our costumes.

Minimal set and flexible casting. Just what a theater teacher needs. This will work great as a joint project for my ffirst year AND upperclass students. And no royalties!
