Description

This set of 3 Google Slides lessons introduces students to shape and number patterns (including input/output tables and function machines). It guides students through how to determine the rule of a pattern and use it to continue the pattern and fill in missing shapes or numbers. It also uses critical thinking skills to make observations and draw conclusions about patterns.

Lesson 1: Shape Patterns

  • explains what a pattern is
  • provides 2 example shape patterns in which students must determine the rule, continue the pattern, fill in missing shapes, and make observations (for example: every 4th shape is a triangle)
  • provides 12 practice problems (just click to reveal the correct answers!) plus access to a free printable worksheet

Lesson 2: Number Patterns

  • reviews what a pattern is
  • provides 2 example number patterns in which students must determine the rule, continue the pattern, fill in missing numbers, and make observations (for example, the numbers alternate odd, even, odd, even...)
  • provides 12 practice problems (just click to reveal the correct answers!) plus access to a free printable worksheet

Lesson 3: Input/Output Tables

  • reviews what a pattern is
  • demonstrates how to use input/output tables and function machines for numerical patterns - students must determine the rule and fill in missing numbers
  • provides 4 practice problems (just click to reveal the correct answers!) plus access to a free printable worksheet

Identify arithmetic patterns (including patterns in the addition table or multiplication table), and explain them using properties of operations. For example, observe that 4 times a number is always even, and explain why 4 times a number can be decomposed into two equal addends.
Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. For example, given the rule “Add 3” and the starting number 1, generate terms in the resulting sequence and observe that the terms appear to alternate between odd and even numbers. Explain informally why the numbers will continue to alternate in this way.
