Description
What do we do at Thanksgiving to plan for the meal? First, we need to find out how many people will be coming over for dinner. Then, we need to plan for the turkey. Plan on serving ¾ pound of turkey to each person. You will need to need to plan for the right amount of turkey. Then, shop to find it.
Next, you will need mashed potatoes. But, potatoes come in bags with varying size spuds. So, you will need to figure out how many pounds of potatoes you’ll need and pick out the right number of potatoes. Every potato has a different weight. You will need (to cut out) the right size potatoes to meet your Thanksgiving needs. Do the math to show how you came up with this number.
Yams are a must. Figure out how many cans of yams you will need to purchase. The cans are 9 ¾ ounces. How many will you need for your guests. Cut and paste the cans of yams to the page and explain.
Plates, forks, napkins… it’s all up to you. But, then there’s dessert. Pumpkin pies are sliced in eighths, and apple pie is sliced in sixths. Figure out how many slices you will be serving and how many pies you will need.
Shopping is fun. There are manipulatives-- students need to fill their grocery cart with the various items they "purchase."
There's even a price list! And, they'll need to figure out the total cost.
Then, there's a problem-- a writing prompt. You only have $20 to pay for your party. Explain the problem and write about ways you could solve it.
