Description

This printable resource allows students to practice ordering rational numbers in a fun, game-like setting. The objective of the game is to organize the set of numbers from least to greatest.

To Play:

  1. One team/player goes first.  He/she places one card on the number line, trying to make the line in order from least to greatest.  Whenever a card is played, it MUST touch a card already on the table.
  2. Continue to take turns.
  3. If a player cannot place a card, he/she loses that turn.
  4. The first player to place all his/her cards wins.  If no player can place all his/her cards, the player with the lowest total wins!

Aligns with CCSS:

  • 6.NS.C.6 Understand a rational number as a point on the number line. Extend number line diagrams and coordinate axes familiar from previous grades to represent points on the line and in the plane with negative number coordinates.
  • 6.NS.C.6.A Recognize opposite signs of numbers as indicating locations on opposite sides of 0 on the number line; recognize that the opposite of the opposite of a number is the number itself, e.g., -(-3) = 3, and that 0 is its own opposite.
  • 6.NS.C.6.C Find and position integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram; find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane.
  • 6.NS.C.7 Understand ordering and absolute value of rational numbers.

Includes:

  • 3 positive-only sets
  • 2 positive & negative sets
