Description

Use the 32 slides with engaging activities, appropriate primarily for Grades 4-8, to convince students to use transition words to spice up their writing. High school students, who need differentiated instruction concerning the use of transitional words, can benefit from this resource, as well. Research shows explicitly teaching writing strategies such as the use of transitional words has a strong impact on the quality of all students’ writing, and it has been found especially effective for students who have difficulty writing. Writing strategy instruction should include the teaching of transition words. Use this resource as a slideshow to explicitly teach transitional words in a whole group setting, or use it to differentiate instruction for those who need it as students could move through this PowerPoint at their own pace. Another option is to print and assemble the slides or pages in packets or handouts and use them in a literacy center or as independent practice. The resource contains activities which require students to exercise their critical thinking skills.

The activities included are the following:

*Printables that promote spicing up writing with transitional words

*Common Core Standards

*Benefits of using transitional words to spice up or improve writing

*Different types of transitional words with examples to add and order details and to contrast information
