Description

This Understanding Functions unit introduces students to the foundational concepts of functions and how they are represented, interpreted, and analyzed in Algebra 1.

The unit is intentionally designed for the average student, with lessons that focus on one concept at a time, gradually increase in difficulty, and spiral key ideas throughout the unit to build fluency and confidence.

Each lesson includes guided notes paired with aligned independent practice, making this unit easy to implement in whole-group instruction, stations, or independent work.

📚 Topics Covered

  • Introduction to functions
  • Evaluating functions algebraically, graphically, and using tables
  • Average rate of change
  • Representing solution sets on a number line (Inequality review and interval notation)
  • Increasing, decreasing, and constant intervals
  • Positive and negative intervals
  • Domain and range

✨ What’s Included

  • Student-friendly guided notes
  • Independent practice aligned directly to each lesson
  • Answer keys for all included activities

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand that a function from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range) assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range. If 𝘧 is a function and 𝘹 is an element of its domain, then 𝘧(𝘹) denotes the output of 𝘧 corresponding to the input 𝘹. The graph of 𝘧 is the graph of the equation 𝘺 = 𝘧(𝘹).
Use function notation, evaluate functions for inputs in their domains, and interpret statements that use function notation in terms of a context.
For a function that models a relationship between two quantities, interpret key features of graphs and tables in terms of the quantities, and sketch graphs showing key features given a verbal description of the relationship.
