Description

This fun and festive Valentine's Day chocolate box craft activity will help your students practice multiplying decimals by decimals. This resource is very easy to use—the only prep is printing! Included in this resource are 30 numbered heart-shaped boxes so that each of your students will have a unique project. Students will multiply the number found on their heart-shaped box by the number found on the cut-and-paste chocolates. Students will then write the product on each chocolate. Also included is an extra practice worksheet for your early-finishers!

This craft is fun for students, looks great in classroom displays, and helps your students practice important math skills! Students will need glue, scissors, and colors in order to complete this activity. Grade-level scissor skills are needed to complete the craft; however I have also included a copy where chocolates are already in the heart-shaped box in case you have a student with below-level scissor skills.

This math activity is aligned to the following TEKS: 5.3.D

This math activity is aligned to the following Common Core State Standards: 5.NBT.B7

I used this resource during my small group instruction. It is differentiated for various ability levels. For my higher students, I chose larger factors and used it before we began our unit. For my mid group, I used this to support our instruction during the corresponding topic of study. My lower students had the simplest factors and was used for reteach and practice at the end of our unit on multiplying decimals. I had all groups check each problem on the calculator to see if they were correct. It gave them great practice using the calculator as I don't usually let them use them. My students absolutely loved this project. They worked so hard on it and loved coloring the little chocolates. My only complaint is that the answer sheet is not conducive for multiplying multiple digit numbers. I had them use the back of the paper. Next year, I will make my own sheet of 8 larger blocks for showing their work. Thanks!

My students loved completing this activity on Valentine's Day. It aligned perfectly with my pacing for the year. I liked that each student could have their own version to complete(students were not able to simply copy someone else's answers) which led to more independent work and allowed me to use it as a benchmark to see who needed reteaching. There was an appropriate amount of work involved before students enjoyed coloring their box of chocolates. The students put enough effort in that I was able to display a lot of their hearts. I will definitely use this again next year.
