Use this resource to introduce, review, and practice volume and measuring with graduated cylinders in your middle school science classroom. This resource includes four interactive science notebook pages and a PowerPoint.
What's covered in the notes:
- Definition of volume
- Units of volume (liters, milliliters, cubic centimeters)
- Tools used to measure volume
- Accurately measuring liquid volume in graduated cylinders
- Measuring from the bottom of a meniscus
- Using the water displacement method to measure the volume of an irregular object
More about the interactive notebook pages:
- Four INB pages sized for composition notebooks are included.
- The INB pages are in PDF form and are not editable.
- The first INB page introduces the definition, tools, and units of volume. The formula to find the volume of a rectangular object is listed.
- The second INB page has a variety of questions to reinforce the meaning of volume.
- The third INB page describes how to accurately measure with a graduated cylinder. A meniscus is pictured and explained. Two graduated cylinders are provided for practice.
- The fourth INB page has students list the steps to measure the volume of an irregularly shaped object.
- Multiple printing options are provided so you can print only what you need.
- The pages can be used alone or with the included PowerPoint.
About the PowerPoint:
- The PowerPoint is 19 slides long.
- It can be used with or without the interactive notebook pages.
- The PowerPoint is a no-frills kind of PowerPoint but is 100% editable so teachers can adapt it to their needs.
