WHY DID I CREATE THIS?

As a Special Education Teacher/ Intervention Specialist, one of the most common IEP and RTI goals that I see is for Math Analysis: specifically understanding word problems / story problems.

Most of the products out there that I have come across include more difficult computation as they teach the different types of word problems. (And trust me; I have looked long and hard).

For a long time now, I have needed something to teach word problems and assess my students understanding of what the problem was asking and how to set it up. I needed something that was more fluid than using a work book. I couldn’t find it, so I created it. And now, I am so excited to share it with you.

I created these word problem products to follow the CGI math strategy using the word problem types that they use: Joining, Separating, Combining, Part/Whole, Multiplying, and Division.

Teaching word problems by type, instead of including the type into Math chapters, allow my students to gain deeper understanding as well as allowing me to progress monitor their understanding. I am able to easily and quickly assess if my students understand addition, and also assess if they TRULEY understand when the START is unknown, CHANGE is unknown or the RESULT is unknown.

So many times I encounter a student who is described as having ‘MASTERED’ addition word problems- when they truly haven’t. They understand word problems such as (…has two pencils, gave two more, how many now? Result unknown); but they do not understand…. (Had some pencils, gave 2 more… Now has 12.. how many did they start with? _ + 2 = (start unknown). And so on.

With the word problem assessments, I can see where they currently are with their knowledge and where I need to start my instruction or intervention. With the journal options, I can choose what problems they will need to practice, and with the BLANK problem sheets, I can differentiate the numbers to make them more challenging for my students who are ready for it.
