Description

Solving word problems can be challenging for many students. Sometimes, even our strongest readers are confused and make errors. This resource provides a series of mini-lessons I have used with my students, they are perfect for whole class, small group or RTI. The lessons are not arranged in a order. They are meant to be used to scaffold students into problem solving. As I teach students to solve problems, I use Read, Draw, Write (RDW). This strategy is used in EngageNY and Eureka math. I have revised this strategy to “Read, Write, Draw, Write”. I use templates for tape diagrams only as an introduction as soon as they are able I will transition to solving and organizing their work on blank paper. Each lesson includes teacher directions to support instruction.

Each lesson with word problem cards have a color and black and white version. It can be easier to keep track of materials that look similar with different colors.

This resource includes the following lessons:

1. If your students are having difficulty writing statements, then try…Writing statements to match the questions

2. If your students are having difficulty writing statements, then try…Matching statement answers to questions

3. If your students are just pulling the numbers out of a problem, then try…What could the question be?

4. If your students are just adding or subtracting the numbers out of a problem, then try…Numberless problems to focus on the operations

5. If your students are having difficulty writing equations, then try…Matching tape diagrams to equations

6. If your students are having difficulty creating a visual, then try…Creating tape diagrams to match equation

7. If your students are pulling the numbers out of a problem, then try…Writing the information to match an equation or question

8. If your students are having difficulty keeping track of information, then try…Labeling tape diagrams

9. If your students are having difficulty creating a visual. then try…Matching tape diagrams to word problems

10. If your students need more practice solving problems, then try…Putting the pieces together

A student checklist is included to encourage self-reflection for growth.
