If you teach elementary-level mathematics, you have likely heard of and at one point utilized Polya's Four Step Plan for problem-solving. Using the Understand, Plan, Solve, and Check (UPSC) model, students are able to solve single and multi-step word problems. This resource pack is based on Polya's model with a significant (I feel) improvement -- a half-step, prior to understand: visualize. This pack includes the following elements: • how to’s and background information on the “4.5 Step Plan”

If you're like me, you were extraordinarily moved by the "I wish my teacher knew..." movement and hashtag on Twitter. Thanks to Denver teacher Kyle Schwartz, many of us have begun to discover things that our students want us to know but have not before shared with us. This is a way to build and maintain a #ClassroomCommunity. I created this writing center addition based upon Kyle Schwartz's original lesson; I take no credit for her idea, hashtags, or anything else -- that was all that amazing t

Matter is one of my favorite things to teach, but it's also one of the most difficult concepts for students to learn. Things like atoms and molecules can be such abstract concepts, which is why I've developed resources, investigations, and a non-fiction text to make matter and its related concepts accessible for all learners! While I use this unit in my second grade classroom, it would be suitable for use for first grade enrichment, as well as in third and fourth grades. Please take a look at t

About the store

Experience

I've taught for second grade three years at a Title I school with a high-ELL population. For the past two years I have taught exclusively English Language Learners in my classroom, which has been an incredible experience. I love to create things for my students which helps them develop and use language, as well as extend their learning beyond the standards.

Teaching style

I love workshop-style teaching, which is why I utilize it in both Language Arts and Math. I follow the Daily 5 and Guided Reading method in Language Arts, and utilize Guided Math and Math Meetings to teach Mathematics. I pull in Science and Social Studies into both core subject areas, as well as teach them independently through units of study as well. My focus as a teacher, however, is to facilitate rather than instruct so my students are working collaboratively and interacting constantly. It can happen, even in second grade! I also believe fully in utilizing the Whole Brain during the school day, so Whole Brain Teaching (WBT) methods are incorporated throughout the day and in each & every lesson.

Awards & shining teacher moments

The greatest honor I've had is when a student told me, after learning a new math strategy and having that crucial "lightbulb" moment -- "You know, Mrs. Plum, I think I'd like to grow up and be a teacher just like you."

My own education history

Master of Teaching in Elementary Education (2012) and Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies in Elementary Education (2012) from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Additional biographical information

I'm a third grade teacher, mother of two boys (including a second grader!), and am about to embark on my fifth year in my own classroom. I love connecting with and learning from other educators, especially here on TpT!
