If your students are any like the students I've taught over the years, they probably struggle with counting coins, finding equivalent values, and making change. Even the brightest students often struggle with these skills! This 200+ page pack is chocked full of teacher tips, how-to's, activities, and resources to teach to those three difficult skills using three tried and true strategies: "hairy" coins for counting, brace maps for equivalent values, and 100's charts for counting and making chan

I am THRILLED to share with you my first in a series of themed place value centers for use as a dedicated center rotation. Place value is a foundational skill that is often neglected; I believe strongly in making it a focus! Included in each edition of Place Value Through the Year are FIVE fully differentiated centers {easily noted by 1 or 2 stars on all materials} in a Back-to-School & Football theme: •"Making Numbers" - Students build two and three-digit numbers using digit cards. About the store

Experience

I've taught for second grade three years at a Title I school with a high-ELL population. For the past two years I have taught exclusively English Language Learners in my classroom, which has been an incredible experience. I love to create things for my students which helps them develop and use language, as well as extend their learning beyond the standards.

Teaching style

I love workshop-style teaching, which is why I utilize it in both Language Arts and Math. I follow the Daily 5 and Guided Reading method in Language Arts, and utilize Guided Math and Math Meetings to teach Mathematics. I pull in Science and Social Studies into both core subject areas, as well as teach them independently through units of study as well. My focus as a teacher, however, is to facilitate rather than instruct so my students are working collaboratively and interacting constantly. It can happen, even in second grade! I also believe fully in utilizing the Whole Brain during the school day, so Whole Brain Teaching (WBT) methods are incorporated throughout the day and in each & every lesson.

Awards & shining teacher moments

The greatest honor I've had is when a student told me, after learning a new math strategy and having that crucial "lightbulb" moment -- "You know, Mrs. Plum, I think I'd like to grow up and be a teacher just like you."

My own education history

Master of Teaching in Elementary Education (2012) and Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies in Elementary Education (2012) from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Additional biographical information

I'm a third grade teacher, mother of two boys (including a second grader!), and am about to embark on my fifth year in my own classroom. I love connecting with and learning from other educators, especially here on TpT!
