Description

This step by step, discussion driven, no-prep notes and practice set that covers Writing Exponential Equations from Word Problems is a great way to teach & introduce analyzing growth and decay exponential word problems to your students. The first page of the notes is more instructional and goes over key words and phrases associated with exponential functions and how to set up and equation given either a percent of increase/decrease or a multiplicative factor with 2 examples to discuss together.  The second page can be used as independent practice or as guided practice, where students work independently, with a partner or within a small group. This set’s practice has 5 scaffolded multi-part problems.  Students and teachers love how easy these notes are to follow and understand.

These notes give a very structured procedural approach to interpreting exponential word problems.  The practice problems included are scaffolded so that they begin at more of an entry level difficulty and then progress into a deeper complexity to encourage problem solving and “productive struggle”.

Use the properties of exponents to interpret expressions for exponential functions. For example, identify percent rate of change in functions such as y = (1.02) to the 𝘵 power, 𝘺 = (0.97) to the 𝘵 power, 𝘺 = (1.01) to the 12𝘵 power, 𝘺 = (1.2) to the 𝘵/10 power, and classify them as representing exponential growth or decay.
Write a function that describes a relationship between two quantities.
Recognize situations in which a quantity grows or decays by a constant percent rate per unit interval relative to another.
