CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.6 asks students to analyze point of view in literature, focusing specifically on works from outside the United States. Exposing students to a variety of perspectives and world literatures is one of the greatest and most important parts of teaching ELA.

“Zapotec Crossers (or, Haiku I Write Post-PTSD Nightmares)” by Alan Pelaez Lopez is an excellent poem for analyzing a point of view from outside of the United States. Plus, this poem is a good tool for working on text structure, symbolism, tone, characterization, irony, and main idea. As an extension, I've also included a creative writing activity and rubric.
