I use this fun Common Core aligned foldable to study the character Destiny as part of lesson 3 (“Destiny’s Gift”) in my Journeys reading basal. However, this resource will easily work for any young character from any story.
Print back-to-back and fold so that the two halves of the face line up. Color the face and add other details to match the physical traits of your character. Upon opening the flaps, the questions about your character’s internal traits should line up in between. Discuss how t

Add stickers or stamps to each square as the student passes through the basic math facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The fun camping themed designs will help motivate students to pass off the different levels.
Collect words with the vowel teams “ai”, “ay”, “ee”, and “ea” in an organized, fun way, and record them under the correct heading. I use these with the Journeys lesson 3. The first page, I have students use as they reread the story of the week, “Destiny’s Gift.” It is a great way to apply practice with the phonics skill and story of the week in one activity/mini lesson. However, these sheets can be applied in many different ways. Students can search for the vowel teams from any story or passage

This interactive PowerPoint lesson was created to go with lesson one of the Houghton Mifflin Journey's program. Week one addresses long vowels. This PowerPoint explains long vowels, gives students practice seeing and saying the sounds, and then has a short multiple choice assessment at the end matching long vowel sounds in words. First we review generally what vowels are. Then, after discussing long vowels, I have kids underline the long vowel sound in each example word on the board. Have the ki

Easy back-to-school and end-of-the-year activity, and a fun way to illustrate students' growth. In the fall, kids color the shapes and write their favorites, goals for the future, best friends, etc. They do this again as the school year is wrapping up. Display both pages side by side in a portfolios/memory binder or on a bulletin board for students and parents to compare and enjoy. Kids change so much in 9 months!
Easy back to school and end of the year activity. How much have I changed in 3rd grade? Students color the shapes and write their favorites, goals for the future, best friends, etc. in the fall...and then again in the spring. I display these side by side in my students' portfolios/time capsules or on a bulletin board for students and parents to compare and enjoy. Kids change so much in 9 months!
Practice compound words with this worksheet or use it as a quick, simple assessment. Two worksheets per page, so cut in half. This was made to correlate with the reading curriculum Journey's week one story "The Trial of Cardigan Jones." I used this in my third grade classroom as a graphic organizer. While they read the story in their text book aloud with a partner, they searched for compound words in the text. This was their recording sheet. We placed the compound word on the first line, then wr

Teaching style
I am a fan of the interactive mini lesson. I love hands on, creative activities as an effective way to hold students' attention and frequently alternate between whole group and small group instruction. There is nothing more satisfying than finding ways for kids to enjoy learning...especially those topics that are considered to be dry or boring!
