This is a quick and painless rubric that can be filled out after observing a child read. The report can be used to communicate with parents in jargon free language and can be attached to a report card. I use it for my intervention students but it can really be used for any early reader. I will leave it editable so you can personalize it based off the strategies you're teaching your students!

Student-friendly Single Target Rubric: Maintaining Objective Tone

Universal Rubrics. All research shows that single-target rubrics are most effective for student learning. This one includes 1-4 scoring, an explanation of objective writing, an example, a list of objective phrases, and a built-in and adaptable assignment that calls for critical thinking. This can also be purchased as part of a single-rubric 5-pack that assesses writing targets consistent with the expectations of Smarter Balanced, SAT, PARCC, MCAP, and others; hence, it is universal.

Ready to use telling time worksheet. Cut it as individual clocks and use it to make booklets for the children. Children will be able to learn the time with these color coded clocks. Red to mark the hour hand and blue for the minute hand. Easy to learn the o'clock hours for those children who are being introduced to time. You can also turn these booklets into flash cards telling the o'clock hour from 1 o'clock to 12 o'clock.

This STEM rubric relates to a task that requires groups of students to design and create a model of a farm paddock with a specific perimeter. It would suit students in years 3-7. It allows for the teacher to assess and for students to self-assess. It is a great piece for a portfolio and provides a good stimulus for students to reflect on their attitudes and skills.

R U A CODE CRACKER? (REMEMBRANCE DAY)

Here’s a poppy code for Remembrance Day for those who liked my first R U A CODE CRACKER? To recap: Dutch primary schools are using Montessori pegboards to introduce kids to coding work. The colours and numbers of the code reveal a pattern. Students must work the code, line by line, to build the surprise picture. My resident IT guru overrode my objection that calling this “coding” seemed a stretch as it looked more like a knitting or weaving pattern, “Well, the punch cards of the Jacquard loom we

R U A CODE CRACKER? (Halloween work)

Dutch primary schools are using Montessori pegboards to introduce kids to coding work. The colours and numbers of the code reveal a pattern. Students must work the code, line by line, to build the surprise picture. Since not every North American classroom has pegboards, I’ve reworked the principle as a “paper-and-pencil-crayon” activity for individuals or pairs. P.S. I protested to my resident IT guru that it seemed a stretch to call this “coding” as it looked more like a knitting or weaving pat
