8th Grade Function Test Prep Task Cards - NC.8.F.5 (Graph Analysis)

This is one standard from my 8th Grade Function EOG Task Cards and Test Prep product. Below is the description for the larger product. THIS product includes 79 questions focused on NC.8.F.5. This North Carolina standard asks students to qualitatively analyze the functional relationship between two quantities by analyzing a graph to determine where the function is increasing or decreasing and whether it is linear or non-linear and to sketch a graph that exhibits the qualitative features of a re

Kill time after a quiz or a test on linear equations! First, students plot ordered pairs on a graph to spell out "I heart math" then they answer questions about the lines they plotted. You can use the plotting points by itself for practice plotting ordered pairs. Students will graph points on graph paper that will spell out I heart math in connected lines. They will then analyze several of those lines (Positive slope, negative slope, no slope, and zero slope). They will be able to write th

Relationships in a Circle

A introduction into lab design, data collection, graphing and slope analysis, formula derivation and percent error calculations. Given to physics and AP physics students to teach them how to - write a lab procedure - predict mathematical relationships - identify dependent and independent variables - collect data - graph - calculate slope - derive equations from a graph - analyze their slope for meaning - calculate percent error

Practicing Linear Equations Riddle

In this activity, students can practicing analyzing the slope and y-intercepts of linear functions. Students select the correct answer and input letters into the puzzle at the bottom in order to solve the riddle. I have used this as both a homework and a post-unit assessment in my Algebra class. Students enjoyed it as it keeps them active while still practicing old skills. I think it is important to provide students with a variety of different assessment formats so that the stress of a typical

MATH : IDEAS for Hands-On Mini Activities in Middle School!

I have listed six of the many short labs we do in my Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 classes. These labs take little or no set up with only a few basic materials. The kids love them because they can move around, work with a partner, and it breaks up the formality of a math class. These labs cover area of a parallelogram, percent models, circle graphs, distance between two points, coordinate graphing, parallel lines, systems of equations, graphing, data collection, LCMs, and the Pythagorean Theorem. Th

Emily Clair
This assignment uses the slider feature in Desmos to guide students to understand how parameters impact the position and shape of a parabola on a graph. Standard, vertex and factored forms are used. The activity could be treated as a guided inquiry or as a formative assessment. Developed for the MFM2P course in Ontario but appropriate for any math course with quadratics.

Graphing Performance Task (Proportional Relationship)

Stacey Frizzell
This is a performance task where students will create their own single or 4-quadrant graph (both are provided) in order to represent a proportional relationship. They can choose any topic (miles/hours, cost/items, etc.), and create data that represents a proportional relationship. This is great for a group task just before the unit test or quiz to apply skills such as identifying proportional graphs and tables, calculating the constant of proportionality, writing equations to represent a graph o

Multiple Representations of Exponential Functions Mix and Match Activity

This culminating activity has four exponential equations and one linear equation with their graphs, tables, and descriptions all mixed up on one page. Students are to cut them up and match the equation to its corresponding table, graph, and description. Included is a formative assessment to check for understanding in which students are given three values on a table and they are to create the graph, the equation, and write a story or description. This is a Word file, so you can make any change

Data and Statistics Project

This project will require students to use data found online as well as data provided in the project. Students will create a stem-an-leaf plot, bar graph, double bar graph, and back-to-back stem-and-leaf plot. In addition to creating graphs students will answer questions about the data dealing with mean, median, mode and range and percent questions. Teachers will need to provide nutritional information from Burger King and Hardees in order for students to complete part 1. These PDF files are avai

This is a song about graphing systems of equations to the tune of "Best Day of My Life" by American Authors. My students and I sing this during our systems of equations unit in algebra class. I also use it as a call and response when students get stuck and don't know what to do. My students have said it helps them remember on quizzes and tests. Music makes memory! Here is the main chorus: I plot my points, connect them, Whoa-Oh Now I’m looking for the coordinates, Whoa-Oh Where 2 lines inters

In the Drawing with Coordinates activity, students will create their own designs by plotting coordinate pairs on paper. They trade their list of coordinate pairs with a partner, who attempts to recreate the original image to see how accurate their algorithm was. Students then enter the same list of ordered pairs into the Coordinate Drawer web app and explore how changing points and reflections affect their designs.
