Powerful visual-mathematical connections with hands-on design challenges. . .
Everyone likes to cheer for someone, and the traditional pennant has been a mainstay of “fandom” for more than a century. Tried, tested, and refined with GATE nonverbal ability 4th and 5th graders, this lesson should be a hit with 6th grade, 7th grade (or beyond) too!
In this lesson, students use geometry, number sense, and measurement skills to design their own pennants. The keyword is PRECISION in these designs.

STEM Kid Engineering for GATE -- Pendulum Wrecking Ball and Magnetic Crane
Come on . . . who doesn’t at least occasionally want to smash stuff?! Use this as an independent project for future engineers, for a smaller STEM group--or if you have a “shop” at your disposal--as a whole class project.
I used this with 5th grade GATE. It could be extended to experienced 4th grade engineers or up through 7th and 8th grade. The math concepts will be a big stretch for the younger kids but provide a healthy discussion. They’ll be right on target for our middle schoolers.

Animal Shelter Business Development Simulation (Gifted 3-5)
This activity set was designed for use in a third through fifth grade gifted resource room. Students research, design, and plan for an animal shelter to house 10 dogs that are randomly assigned. Using these dogs students:
