Polynomial Function Project - Roller Coaster

Created by
Algomath
In this project, students learn how to use polynomial function to model roller coaster rides. In this first part, they are given some polynomial functions to find the relative maximum/minimum, increasing/decreasing intervals, x- and y-intercepts, etc. They will explore the average rate of change. In the second part of the project, students are asked design their own roller coaster given some basic criteria. Students should use graphing devices/computer applications to complete this project.

Using Percents and Proportions to Teach Electoral College

The question that will loom over the course of students' lifetimes: What should we do with the Electoral College? To construct a position on this question, students must objectively digest and analyze data to reveal proportionality. In this inquiry-based project, which can be done in class or self paced, students will practice converting fractions into decimals into percents. They will then compare and contrast percentages to determine if proportionality is maintained when scaling the general p

In this project, students helped me to determine how much money I would need to spend on my wedding centerpieces. The students had to apply discounts to individual items, and figure out how many of each item was needed (if they were sold in packages). The students then had to figure out how much money I would need for each part of the centerpiece, then add it up together in the end. This project was developed for a Pre-Algebra class, so the project is guided by small steps and questions to br

7th Grade Common Core Scale Drawing Assignment

I use this assignment as a quiz in my class. The assignment can be easily lengthened into a project. The assignment allows students to be as creative as they would like, but still forces them to use scale drawing principals. The assignment has no "right" answer but as a teacher you can easily see "correct" answers and gain lots of feedback about your students. I hope your class enjoys it as much as mine did.

In this project, the student should take a tape measure, ruler, or yardstick and measure the lengths of the walls of their bedroom. They add the measurements and compute the perimeter. Then they ask an adult or older sibling to do the same. Finally, they calculate the percent error based on the parent's / older sibling's measurements. This is a great "distance learning" project.

Newspaper Ad Project, Area, Percents, Proportions

Hands on activity to reinforce measurement skills and area calculations. Students calculate area of news articles and advertisement using a page from the newspaper and determine the percent area that is advertisement versus news articles. Students only need a ruler and a page from the newspaper to complete the activity. A blank table is provided for students to tabulate their results. This activity is perfect for independent or group work, and could also be used for a sub plan.
