Polynomial Function Project - Roller Coaster

Created by
Algomath
In this project, students learn how to use polynomial function to model roller coaster rides. In this first part, they are given some polynomial functions to find the relative maximum/minimum, increasing/decreasing intervals, x- and y-intercepts, etc. They will explore the average rate of change. In the second part of the project, students are asked design their own roller coaster given some basic criteria. Students should use graphing devices/computer applications to complete this project.

This document contains a statistics project description that allows students to create their own project. This is suitable for high school and beginning level college statistics class. Students will design their own study - formulate research questions, collect data, organize and summarize the findings, calculate confidence interval and construct hypothesis testing. Certain restrictions are outlined in the document. Students will experience the complexity of constructing their own study. They a

This is a worksheet to review least squares regression. Students are provided with data of advertising expense and sales. Through a guided-question worksheet, students will create scatter-plot, find the regression line, and use the model to make estimations. They are also asked about the slope, y-intercept, linear correlation, causation, and out-of-scope situation. Teacher may also encourage discussion of business practices, such as sales and advertising. The document also contains suggested

This is a 2-page summary worksheet on combining functions (including composition), inverse functions, properties of function (domain, range, increasing/decreasing intervals), and transformation of functions. It is packed with graphing exercises in transformation. This would be good for a study guide for a pre-calculus/algebra 2 test on functions or a quick review of functions in a beginning calculus class.

This is a quick in-class exercise on Factor and Remainder theorem worksheet with additional exercise. Teacher can use this while teaching the section. It includes definition of the two theorem. Students would use the remainder theorem to find the remainder when a polynomial is divided by x-a without performing any long or synthetic division. Students should note that when f(a) =0, then x-a is a factor of such polynomial when they were presented with the factor theorem. Then, students would use

Discover trigonometric functions through objects around our lives. Students will take pictures of objects where they can model using the basic trigonometric functions and their transformations. The document is editable. The idea is to assign students in groups and work on a photo project together. They are supposed to observe trigonometric functions in real life, take pictures, and create a function that models the real object. Teachers should encourage students to incorporate transformation o

This set of Alphabet Flashcard is from a Microsoft Word template. Each piece has a Picture and a word that correspond to the Alphabet. Unlike other alphabet flashcards, this set contains the Chinese translation to the English word. It is appropriate for parents and teachers who want to expose students to English and Chinese at an early age. It also helps students to build their English and Chinese vocabulary. This is a word document - each page contains 2 flashcards.

This document contains 10 problems on central tendency problems. It includes problems on finding the mean, median, mode, midrange, and weighted mean. It is intended for students who have finished the central tendency unit in their statistics class or for students who are preparing for the SAT. Since the new SAT has a significant components of solving statistics application problem, I am going to put together some drill exercise, mainly application problems, for students who are studying for th

This 6-page document contains a brief introduction to graphing piecewise function and writing linear functions for each segment of a piecewise function. It is appropriate to use in a classroom where teachers can guide students to plotting piecewise function using a table of value and properties of linear function. It follows with guided exercises for students to practice in class or at home.

In this project, students are asked to research the history of USPS and find historic data of US forever stamp prices for the past 50 years. They are asked to use the data to create a scatter/plot (time series) and create a line of best fit. They are asked to create both a linear model and an exponential model, and compare which of the two models is a better for the data collected. Then they would use the best fit line to make prediction of future postage. Rubric of this project is also attache

In this project, students are asked to create a holiday gift wrapping container, calculate the surface area and volume, and compare the analytical results from the actual craft. The idea is that students should take measurements of the material and the craft, and use the geometric formulas to do calculations of surface area and volume. Students should note the difference in measurements due to cutting or overlapping pieces when taping the structure. Some errors may occur when the shape is not a

Teaching style

I am a more traditional instructor. I have tried to be creative by using flipped classroom and smart devices. However, I have found that students still learn best when they are given one-on-one, face-to-face instruction. Instruction needs not be dry. I think good demonstration with concrete examples would engage students learn better. Then they would be more confident in solving problems on their own. I have also allotted a lot more class time on class practice for students to work on problems. I also like to give case study assignments to my students.
