Cryptography and Matrices

Doing cryptography with matrices is always fun! I used this as a quiz -- students had to decode the message "Once upon a time in a far away land..." and then for extra credit they get to finish the sentence. I got some really fun endings and students were excited when they decoded the message correctly. I've attached my work to show how I originally encoded the matrix. This could easily be modified to be turned into a project or another activity.

Spreadsheet projects are designed to work in an online learning format, especially if the teacher can share their screen or share an editable document with their class. The style is quite different from the textbook presentation which is heavy on calculation and external applications. The spreadsheet operations do most of the calculation and the aim is exploration of structure that a real mathematician would care about. This resource contain a lesson for one day along with exercises. The cont

Looking for a little project to do in December? Have your students make holiday ornaments using their angle measure skills! I assign this as a small quiz grade, and this year I even assigned it virtually and had students send me photos of their finished projects. You could also assign it as a take home (maybe extra credit even) over the December break. I randomly assign each student an angle in radian measure (my sheet of angles is attached), and for their angle they convert it to degrees, draw
