Students will use bingo chips (or anything else you choose to symbolize electrons) and will map out electrons on a Bohr model to determine the total number of valence electrons for each given element. This can be used as an inquiry before valence electrons are taught or as a simulation so students can visualize why an element has that many valence electrons. I also have my students do the electron configurations for each element.
