Distribution SOCS (Graphic Organizer)

Created by
Stats4Justice
When comparing and describing our boxplots, stemplots, histograms, dotplots, and other data displays it is vital that our students fully explain the differences and similarities in each distribution. SOCS (shaper, outlier, center, and spread) is a great acronym used to remember the four most important concepts that need to be discussed. This graphic organizer is a great tool to use as a warm-up or opener to a quiz or test. Or as an exit ticket to close our a lesson on comparing distributions.

The Convicted with Statistics project applies joint probability (conditional and unconditional). Students explore dependent and independent events, as well as questionable interpretations of statistics which could incite convictions in court. Students discuss the failings of expert witnesses for two separate court cases in which statistics nailed down a conviction. The concept of prosecutor's fallacy is introduced. This document contains a flow chart like diagram breaking down a variable into its types and provides brief examples of each and is appropriate for AP Statistics or college level introductory statistics. It is intended that additional information be provided by the instructor to elaborate on this diagram, but students have found this simplified version easier to study and to understand the basic differences in the types of variables and levels of measurement. Brief Notes on Compound (Independent vs Dependent) Events Quick Notes - Probability My notes are scaffolded for student learning to slowly lose the reigns of learning into students' hands. These notes focus on teaching students about Compound events and how to approach problems based on the vocab. The notes focuses on 4 topics: And, Or, Given, and Not. Each has a rule and 2 examples. I teach students with brief notes that allot more time in class for students to practice material. I give an ass
