Traditional hundreds charts start at the top and go down, which is counter-intuitive to the understanding that as numbers increase, they have greater value (worth more) than the numbers that come before them. My students found this chant helpful when they are not sure when they need to regroup when subtracting three-digit numbers (especially across zeros). This is also a great visual for what marks they should be making when regrouping. I created a poster to post on our classroom wall and a laminated a handout so students would refer to it when completing daily classwork, lesson quizzes and unit tests.
