How Wet is the Earth Random Sampling & Estimating Activity

Have students practice a random sampling method to see the proportion of water that covers the earth's surface. Students individually and with a partner create confidence intervals to show the range of values to be expected based on their data, then graph these points on a dot plot to illustrate the average spread of data. Introduce a margin of error and talk about its significance before having students think about how increasing sample size would affect their proportions.
