My students found this chant helpful when they are not sure when they need to regroup when subtracting three-digit numbers (especially across zeros). This is also a great visual for what marks they should be making when regrouping. I created a poster to post on our classroom wall and a laminated a handout so students would refer to it when completing daily classwork, lesson quizzes and unit tests.

This task analysis can be used to help walk students through the steps of solving a triple-digit problem, from determining the operation, to self-talk that should be used throughout, up through the final answer.
