Milk Fireworks Science Experiment
In this exciting experiment, students witness the reaction caused by the breakdown of fat in foods. Students add a few drops of water based food coloring to a bowl of whole milk. When grease cutting detergent is added, the fat is quickly broken down causing the water based food coloring to mix with the milk. The reaction resembles fireworks- without the boom! This lab describes the concept of density and leads students through the steps to find the density of several small objects. I used small objects such as beads, paperclips, small rocks, nuts/bolts, and marbles (anything that would fit in a graduated cylinder!!).
