Modeling percent with thermometers 2: Blake's Dilemma
Fractions and percent drives fifth grade crazy. I have designed a powerpoint for explaining percents using a thermometer. Much like the common core number line concept, the thermometer compares 100 percent to a whole number and then breaks the number into smaller pieces. Based on "Technology-Enhanced Items" on computerized tests, this short test/quiz uses only one piece of paper and includes base ten block graphics, "drag-and-drop" word banks, and a section for students to create a drawing/model of decimals using base ten blocks which they have to compare with greater than/less than symbols.
