How Many Seeds Are in a Pumpkin? Scientific Investigation
I designed this scientific investigation for my third graders this year. In groups of 3 or 4, students will make a hypothesis about the number of seeds in their pumpkin, measure the circumference, weight, height, and whether it sinks or floats (data section), record the properties of their pumpkin (color, texture, shape), and then finally cut open the pumpkin and count the number of seeds. This activity introduces students to the basic concept of life. For this activity I pour mountain dew into a beaker, then drop in about 10 dried raisins. To start off the activity I ask the students to observe what is in the beaker and determine if they are living or non-living.
