Introduction to Writing Hook Sentences

My third graders are learning how to make our writing more exciting this week, so I made this as an introduction. The first page is for them to do with me as a class and glue into their Writer's Notebooks. The next pages are for them to practice on their own. I wanted to focus on three types of hooks: asking a question, stating a fact, and painting a picture. There are many other types, but in the interest of not overwhelming them, I chose these three types. Enjoy!

Introduction, Conclusion, and Reasons Graphic Organizer for Opinion Writing

My third graders are having trouble writing complex introduction and conclusion paragraphs in their opinion writing. I created this graphic organizer to help them plan out each part and make a "juicier" paragraph! Hope this helps your classes too! I also added a page for them to plan their reasons with details and examples too.

Quadrilateral Wanted Poster Activity

Get ready to become a shape detective! In this fun “Wanted Poster” activity, students will choose a quadrilateral “criminal” and create a creative poster describing its special attributes, how it can be identified, and where it might be found in real life. As students compare shapes like squares, rectangles, rhombuses, trapezoids, and parallelograms, they will strengthen their understanding of quadrilaterals, notice how they are alike and different, and make real-world connections in an engaging

Depth and Complexity Icons For Classroom

I have created a class poster set of the 19 icons included in the Depth and Complexity Prompts for Gifted Students. We are using these at our school site in order to challenge students to think more deeply. Each page contains the name of the icon, the symbol, prompting questions for that particular tool, and a supporting graphic. I plan on hanging these around my room and referring to them throughout my lessons during the year! *Updated to PDF format!*

Student Agenda/Planner Weekly Pages

I just took a class on AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) strategies and learned about some great ways to develop good organizational skills for student in lower grades. I designed these planner pages for my third graders to keep track of their homework and hold them accountable for completing it each week. I added a couple touches that are relevant in my own classroom (like spelling word list, reading homework, setting a weekly goal, choosing an exercise to do daily, parent signatu

Map of Our Classroom

I wanted to start our geography unit with something fun so after looking at maps in atlases and studying the map keys, I let the students put their learning to the test by creating a map of their own classroom! Help your class come up with symbols for common things in a classroom or I included another version with a blank key for you to fit to your own room. Remember to post North, South, East, West directions in your room so students can orient their maps! (These direction posters are included!

Special Quadrilateral Wanted Poster

I created this project for my third graders as we learn about special quadrilaterals. Each student chooses a special quadrilateral (parallelogram, rhombus, square, rectangle, or trapezoid) and then give it a "criminal name", write a description (2 sets of parallel sides, all equal sides, 1 right angle, etc.), where it might be found, a reward, and contact information. The back is the final draft of the poster including space for students to draw a picture of their "Quadrilateral Criminal". Have

Intro to Genres

This PowerPoint presentation starts with students first becoming familiar with categorizing familiar objects into categories and sub-categories. It then relates this idea to books and how books can be categorized into genres and sub-genres. This PowerPoint just focuses on the 5 main genres: Fiction, Nonfiction, Folklore, Drama, and Poetry. It incorporates interactive activities for the students and opportunities for participation! The last activity is a genre sort using pictures and book summar

How Many Seeds Are in a Pumpkin? Scientific Investigation

I designed this scientific investigation for my third graders this year. In groups of 3 or 4, students will make a hypothesis about the number of seeds in their pumpkin, measure the circumference, weight, height, and whether it sinks or floats (data section), record the properties of their pumpkin (color, texture, shape), and then finally cut open the pumpkin and count the number of seeds. To help with management during the measuring process, there is also a pumpkin design page that groups can w

Google Maps Computer Exploration

In my third grade class, we are learning about geography and my students got so excited when I showed them the "Street View" on Google Maps. I created this independent activity for them to explore different places around the world. They type in the place, record the country and continent, and make one (or more!) observations about that place. I made sure there was at least one place from each continent. There is a place for their own address, their school's address (if you provide it), and also

What Does a Crayfish Eat? Scientific Investigation

This is an investigation I created to complement the third grade FOSS science unit involving classroom crayfish. I wanted my students to understand the various steps of the scientific method and get hands-on experience with it. This investigation guides the students through the steps, asks them to define each step ("A hypothesis is _______."), and uses sentence frames to support all learners as they try to figure out the foods that crayfish eat. The Results section allows for 6 different foods t

I made this resource to support my third grade students in Engage New York Module 4. This product is intended as a reading guide for the story "Roxaboxen" by Barbara Cooney. Page 1 is making a prediction based on the title, discussing the setting (Yuma, AZ), and understanding vocabulary. Page 2 is a discussion about the services, rules, and consequences in communities. Students can compare and contrast their own community with the one in Roxaboxen. This also correlates well with the California History and Social Studies standards. Making Connections While Reading

I used this while teaching my book club groups how to make three types of connections as they read: text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world. I had them read their book and put color-coordinated post-its where they made the connection, then when they were done reading, they went back and recorded it on this paper. I added sentence frames at the top of each column to scaffold for my students that needed it. Enjoy!
