I did not like that EL Education does not have a product where you can clearly see the clipart pictures. It is impossible to find. I also did not like have the letters shown on top of the images. My first graders need to clearly see where their letters should be written, it is hard enough to keep them from reversing the formations. After countless hours of searching for an alphabet that fit my needs and also included the strange EL vocabulary for its images, I ended up creating my own. I hope t

We use these templates as we begin our Lucy Calkins Non-Fiction Writing Unit. But I believe they could be used with any Non-Fiction writing unit. I made several different versions of pages with more lines and less lines, different cover pages and blank ones as well. Meeting with your students one-on-one can be very rewarding! They seem to open up and allow you get to know them better as readers and writers. I use the pages in my classroom to jot down notes about our visits. On both the reading and writing conference pages I leave room for a "glow" and a "grow." Glow: something the student did well.
