I currently teach 3rd grade in Massachusetts. This is my third year teaching 3rd grade. I also taught 1st grade for 3 years before moving up to 3rd grade.
Engineering Task:
Make a tower out of no more than 100 marshmallows and 100 toothpicks. The goal is to hold as many pennies as possible.
There are two tests at the beginning of this assignment to help the students discover the strength of triangles. Then the students are asked to design a structure of their own. Then they must join their group and discuss their designs. They then decide on a final group design. Then they build their tower.

Could be used for a variety of topics. I have used it as an end-of-year class project: "The ABCs of Room 35's." I have also used it for a end-of-year review project for social studies: "The ABCs of Massachusetts."

I encourage my students to do them outside of class and for their efforts, I reward them with a small prize. I have had many parents tell me they love having a challenge problem to work on with their student.
