I currently teach 3rd grade in Massachusetts. This is my third year teaching 3rd grade. I also taught 1st grade for 3 years before moving up to 3rd grade.
After a unit on how animals adapt to living in their environment, the students complete a short research project on an animal of their choice. This project can be completed in class, but is also simple enough to complete at home.
I have included the student assignment sheet, student research worksheet, a sample of a final draft and a grading rubric.
Engineering Task:
Make a tower out of no more than 100 marshmallows and 100 toothpicks. The goal is to hold as many pennies as possible.
There are two tests at the beginning of this assignment to help the students discover the strength of triangles. Then the students are asked to design a structure of their own. Then they must join their group and discuss their designs. They then decide on a final group design. Then they build their tower.

A Student Favorite! To show me what my students have learned about life in space and on different planets, they design space ships to travel around space. They must design and label the interior and exterior of their ships. Then write about why they added the features that they did.
These 3 items are pieces of my simple machines unit. Each day we learn about a different simple machine. We find the definition and real-life examples of each one and record it in our "Simple Machines Notebook" (included). Once we have learned about each simple machine, the students write an informative essay on simple machines (included). Lastly, I have included a simple machines quiz that I use.
A worksheet to help your student's record their planet research. It is organized in typical paragraph structure: topic sentence, details and conclusion. The final draft will have 3 paragraphs. The final draft paper is included as well.
A creative writing assignment in our space unit. The students record information about a new planet in a journal entry (draw and write about a planet that they make up).
