The activity is a supplemental resource to encourage students to see how Lamarck and Darwin developed their theories of evolution with a scenario of giraffes and snakes. It allows the students to see the flaws in Lamarck's ideas and how they were translated into Darwin's ideas. The assignment ends with an essay assignment that has the students consider what is a "favorable" trait in our culture and to discuss their thoughts on modern medicine and natural selection.

DIRECTIONS: For this activity, you will be utilizing probability in the same way as Biologists and Geneticists do in the “Scientific World.” You will be flipping a coin to determine the number of times you flip for heads or flip for tails. Students can work individually, in pairs, or small groups to simulate "thinking like Mendel" using the data he collected in his gardens. Students will (hopefully) draw similar conclusions about the fundamentals of inheritance as they work through the assignment. I use this task BEFORE teaching Punnett squares in an effort to have students understand the methodology/logic of Mendel's procedures. Updated March 2025

This format is utilized in a group setting at the college level when students present their results opposed to writing formal lab reports. In this high school version, each student completes one portion of the presentation while the team leader oversees everyone's work. It is a practice in collaboration along with preparation for college level work. This can be used as a guide and across any science curriculum!

This supplemental assignment is an introduction into a slime mold predation lab. It is aligned to the NGSS SEP: Obtaining, Evaluating and Communicating Information. Students have background information on the author and content context before reading the approximately 2 page article. There are 15 questions based on the reading; answers are italicized and should be removed before printing. There are 15 questions aligned to the reading and an extension question to further student engagement.

This 6 page document is used on the first day of school after expectations for the course have been discussed. I use it to get a little background on the students and to get their perspectives on strengths, weaknesses, and learning. I have cited and revised the letter/article by Dr. R. Leamnson (https://www1.udel.edu/CIS/106/iaydin/07F/misc/firstJob.pdf) to outline expectations for my course while encouraging students on the importance of learning, understanding, and knowing.

Students work through their understanding of structure determining function through inquiry questions. Students first examine the structure of their hand and then relate the structures to their functions (knuckles for knocking, etc). The questions build on highlighting the relationship between structure and function for the ultimate understanding of changing the structure will change the function. Outlines the proper form of having students solve "speed" problems by defining their given information, the formula they are using, their calculations, and their answer.

Short class activity to review the relationships between DNA, RNA, and proteins; can be assigned as homework or used as a introduction before teaching the formalities of protein synthesis. Answers are highlighted in yellow and will need deleted before use.

Using the mRNA codon chart, students will examine what happens if you change each of the bases within a codon and the effect it has on amino acid that is coded. This pattern based assignment allows students to see the benefits of the wobble effect. This is a scaffolded support for students who are in an advanced class without necessarily being ready for this high level class.

This is an activity that can take anywhere from 2 days to 5 days. It can be used with Introductory Biology or Nutrition classes. It utilizes an understanding of the four major macromolecules and application of this knowledge in classifying food items. Students are required to find recipes for a ficitious restaurant and then identify what benefits are provided by their meals. They then must create a course meal for people with special diets.

I took over for a class in the middle of the year and utilized this as a tool to have seniors look at their goals and ways to achieve them. For questions 8 and 9 you have the students complete the sentence then change "have to" to "choose to" and "can't" to "don't want to" --can be very insightful.
