This is a great review lab activity for kids to practice using data to identify unknowns as acids, bases, or salts. Students identify 12 unknowns using red and blue litmus paper and phenolphthalein and then predict the pH for 3 of them. They end the activity with writing neutralization equations. This is a great way to introduce the law of conservation of mass and allows the kids to get in the lab and witness it for themselves! The lab is written to use sodium hydroxide and either zinc nitrate or cobalt (II) nitrate but you could modify based on what chemicals you have available.
