Parts of a parabola vocabulary diagram

This is a one-page document that highlights the important features of a quadratic function. It shows an example when the parabola is facing upwards and another example when it is facing downwards. I print it out for my students in black and white so they each have a copy. I also print a colored version which I laminate and keep in a pocket folder on each of my 9 tables. Students then use this as a resource to help within the unit. Enjoy! After downloading, please rate me and give feedback

Quadratic performance task completing the square and factoring

This document is a performance task that guides students through the important features of a parabola by analyzing dolphins jumping. Students should have already learned how to factor and complete the square. They will use this to determine the zeros of the graph along with the vertex of the graph. They will also learn to recognize that the y-intercept is the c-value of a quadratic. A checklist is on the last working page along with a rubric that I used to score this task. Extension questio

Factoring Trinomials when a is 1 Scavenger Hunt

My scavenger hunts are a great way to practice basic skills in a fun and active way. Students walk around the room factoring trinomials when a is 1. The first two pages of the document are the student work pages. The rest of the pages should be posted around the classroom in a random order. (I like to print them on colored pieces of paper) Students may start at any of the problems in the room. When they first get to the get to the problem, they should write down the letter that appears on the

Quadratic equations group activity: factoring, completing the square and formula

This worksheet is designed as a group activity for groups of 3. Each member of the group will get a worksheet in which he/she needs to solve by factoring, using the quadratic formula or completing the square. The group members will compare their answers with each other which helps visualize that no matter which method you use, the answer will be the same. If there is a disagreement in the answers students must work together to problem solve and find the error. It is great practice for error

System of equations using substitution guided notes

The following is a document with guided notes to solve a system of equations using substitution. Also on my page is a video where I explain some basic information and how to solve the first 3 problems. Students will then complete the rest of the worksheet on their own. Enjoy! After downloading, please rate me and give feedback! Follow me if you would like to see more.

Representing Linear, Quadratic and Exponential Functions Worksheet

This 2 page document shows graphs of 2 linear, 1 exponential, and 1 quadratic function. First students are asked to make observations about each of the graphs. (I would pause for a class discussion after this section) Then students are asked to relate the graphs to equations, table of values, and real world situations. Answer key is included. Enjoy! Factoring Trinomials when a equals 1

This video goes along with factoring trinomials when a equals 1 guided notes (attached). It is a very straightforward explanation on how to solve. Students in my class love this because if they are advanced they may try to solve and then play the video to see if they are correct or struggling students have the videos for future reference or can pause or rewind while watching the video.

multiplying binomials and factoring trinomials help

I print this document double sided and laminate it for each table in my classroom. It visualizes the relationship between multiplying binomials by distributing and factoring by grouping. I started factoring by grouping as my only method of factoring as it works for when a is 1, when a isn't 1, and difference of perfect squares. This seems to have helped my students as there are no longer any tricks. Enjoy! After downloading, please rate me and give feedback! Follow me if you would like to s

Experience

I have been teaching math since 2009. For the majority of my career I've been teaching 8th graders and ALL of my students take Algebra I, including special ed students. Since COVID I've focused on creating digital activities and with my struggling students I create guided notes, organizers to help make succeeding in Algebra more Achieveable!

Teaching style

I try to combine a combination of interesting activities while realizing that sometimes students just need to practice math. The scavenger hunts are designed to practice skills in an entertaining way. Performance tasks are designed to apply real world topics and have multiple entry ways for students with extensions for the advanced. Tests are very similar to the New York State Regents.
