Sloping Squares - Pythagorean Theorem Investigation Task

I love to use this task to introduce the Pythagorean Theorem to students. For less confident students, it has a good starting point which builds on prior knowledge of areas of squares, and leads them through it. For more confident students, it deepens their understanding to ensure they have more than just a recall of the formula. The approach used provides an excellent way of then proving the Pythagorean theorem algebraically in an accessible way. **********************************************

In this investigation, students explore what determines whether a fraction will be a terminating or recurring decimal (repeating decimal). They explore different fractions and the prime factorization of the denominator to then observe patterns before drawing some conclusions. Investigations are a key part of mathematical learning. Encouraging students to explore patterns, make observations, draw conclusions and try to justify these are essential skills of being a mathematician. CONTENTSTwo vers
