Looking at complex functions can be scary, but understanding where they come from and how they relate to each other can help! Using common parent functions, students will practice function transformations, specifically shifting, by both graphing and writing equations. The concept of a "family tree" is used to show students that functions can be related, but also unique individuals. Many Calculus students struggle to solve problems, not because they don't know how to do the math but because they do not understand what they are being asked to do. Math vocabulary at this high level is especially important, and students have never heard or seen many of the Calculus terms! Piecewise functions are sometimes intimidating to students, but they don't have to be! In this activity, students will collaborate and discover that piecewise functions are simply combinations of parent functions they already know! The Standards of Mathematical Practices provide students with a guide of how to approach a problem. These visual aids help students remember the strategies, even giving them a starting point when stuck in practice. I hang these posters around my white board as a constant reminder of all the great skills my students are capable of!
