I have taught middle and high school for 22 years. Many of my students did not succeed when I used the teaching methods taught to me in college and grad school. A lot of the students needed much more practice than I expected. So I began hunting for and often writing my own practice and looking for ways to make it fun.

Struggling students seem to have less working memory than those who excel at math. These students have difficulty remembering the steps of an algorithm and math facts simultaneously, especially in long division.  All students can master division if their practice is designed to lessen the load on working memory. This distance learning or independent project includes 1. Student instructions 2. Grading rubric 3. Teacher tips and instructions. This straightforward project can be used anytime students have to memorize facts. Simply combine the project with quizzes on the facts students are learning. I have not included quizzes because this project could cover any facts from basic addition facts, multiplication tables, perfect squares, theorems, formulas, definitions, etc.

Teaching style

Lots of successful practice - especially self checking or scaffolded. Constant spiral review and tying topics together. Introducing skills in baby steps. Making every child successful in math.
