Mnemonics Devices for American History Through Reconstruction
This is a short, tried and true way to get students to memorize the first 17 US Presidents and the 13 Original Colonies. I created and used it when I taught American History through Reconstruction.
I learned that if students knew the order of the presidents, then they would have a built-in time frame of when things happened.

Teaching style
I think your best bet is a little bit of everything. Hands- on, partner work, group work, working individually, lectures, note taking, student-made, technology, centers, games, you name it. A good mix keeps the attention of the kids. Everyone learns differently as we all know.
