About the store

Experience

I taught in a high poverty, inner-city school district for 3 1/2 years, before moving to my current school district, where I have been teaching for 4 years. This is my third year teaching 2nd grade and I LOVE it!

Teaching style

My daily teaching goal is 100% engagement in whatever we are doing. I don't know if the saying, "the student who does the work, does the learning" is a famous quote, but it was made famous to me by Mrs. Kay Wait.

Awards & shining teacher moments

In 2013, I wrote and published an article in The Reading Teacher, a journal by the International Reading Association. It's called, "Let Me Tell You a Secret: Kindergartners Can Write!" You can read the abstract here: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/TRTR.1162/abstract In 2010, I had the honor of meeting President Obama at the White House. I was invited by my teacher's union (AFT) and got to see the Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act (HR 1586) be passed in the senate, then signed by the president himself. It was definitely the silver lining in being laid off twice in three months.
