This 8-week Water Unit covering Physical Science, Life Science, and Earth Science standards. This unit covers vocabulary, quizzes, projects, labs, study guide, and test. You go from phases of matter, to the water cycle, to weather, to groundwater, to aquifers, to water filtration. This lab is used for modeling the solar and lunar eclipse using a flashlight and Styrofoam balls in the classroom. Materials: 2 skewers 2 different sizes of foam balls (1 small to represent the moon, 1 medium to represent the Earth).

This lab takes almost 2 full class periods to complete with jr. high students. First we set up the lab like the picture shows. Take Lux readings at Position 1 for transmission and position 2 for reflection. Then we rank them most reflective to least reflective. This lab may take several days once the water samples are collected. You can do different water samples from bottled water, different city water, different ponds, etc. Easier to have all the materials out and the students grab what they need off of a lab table otherwise you need setup time in order to make sure each lab table has enough supplies for each group.

I follow the 5 E's as an educator. Every unit being taught should include some research, engage, exploration, explanation, elaboration or extension of the phenomena, and then an evaluation through assessment or a project.
