Formal Analysis & Principles of Design Booklet with Answers

Created by
AR Lessons
I created this lesson for my grade 9's to simplify Formal Analysis using the Principles of Design. There are very specific ways to talk about art and this is it! It is very hard to teach this to grade 9's, therefore this booklet helps to do it in the most logical way! After each Principle, I show famous paintings and we critique them one by one using the Principle.

Elements of Art Lesson - Booklet and Answers

I use this for my grade 9's within the first few weeks of the semester. I have included the Elements of Art Booklet (that is printable so the students can write in the blanks and draw where necessary) as well as the Teacher Copy below it. This will only take 1.5 periods. Before I introduce the Elements, I play a game with them first. One partner has a simple object drawn on a page (I made these) and they have to describe it to their partner to draw, without pointing at or correcting the draw

I use this to introduce art pencils and pencil techniques to my grade 9's in the first week of school. After I teach the different parts of a sphere, I use a white ball & lamp to show how shadows move with light, and how reflected light works using different coloured paper placed underneath the ball.

Experience

5 Years as a High School Visual Arts Teacher.

Teaching style

I always start by telling my students I'm starting from the beginning, assuming they know nothing. They have to learn and practice skills before attempting to draw! I always teach by example, using a document camera projecting what I am doing onto the screen.

My own education history

I attended an Art School in Toronto (OCADU - The Ontario College of Art & Design University). During my years there, I realized that I did not want to be a "gallery artist" and my dream of being a "set designer" was slowly going to be taken over by digital animation. Becoming an art teacher was a logical choice for me because all of my jobs in my teens and 20's were volunteering or working teaching art to younger students!
