I created this resource as an introduction to derivatives for my precalculus class. It may also work well as cooperative investigation or review in calculus. Students are guided to make connections between slope, average rate of change, and instantaneous rate of change. They then expand on these ideas to create equations for lines tangent and perpendicular to a curve at a given point. This assessment was created for the IB MYP program (year 5) criterion B. It is an investigation into rational functions and their domain/range. Students use previous knowledge of transformations of family functions to complete the investigation and make conclusions based on the patterns observed.

This is an IB MYP (year 5) assessment for criterion D, real-life application. If at a non-MYP school, it works as a great project or class activity. Students complete a lab to demonstrate the properties of projectile motion in the context of quadratic functions. They then use their data to make predictions and justify the accuracy of their solutions. It makes for interesting conversation about the parameter of what solutions are acceptable in the context of real-life problems involving physics.
