Rate of Change & Derivatives Guided Notes/Practice

I created this resource as an introduction to derivatives for my precalculus class. It may also work well as cooperative investigation or review in calculus. Students are guided to make connections between slope, average rate of change, and instantaneous rate of change. They then expand on these ideas to create equations for lines tangent and perpendicular to a curve at a given point. This resource includes a Power Point, guided notes section with examples and practice problems for the students

Rational Functions - IB Criterion B Assessment

This assessment was created for the IB MYP program (year 5) criterion B. It is an investigation into rational functions and their domain/range. Students use previous knowledge of transformations of family functions to complete the investigation and make conclusions based on the patterns observed.

Graphs of Exponential and Logarithmic Functions

This product may be used as guided notes, exploration, additional practice, or review. The key provided uses the method of mapping using point to point transformations and interval notation for domain and range, but you made teach use the outline with the methods and notation familiar to your students. The goal of this activity is to help students make connections between the inverse properties of exponents and logarithms, while reviewing how transformations change the direction and location of
Preview of All Things Limits

All Things Limits

This instructional material contains a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation. It covers continuity, limits by inspection, finding limits algebraically, and identifying vertical and horizontal asymptotes using limits. Complete with examples and explanations. *Introductory lesson-does not include L'Hospitals rule.

Compositions and Inverses Presentation

This PowerPoint presentation takes students through the process of writing and evaluating composite functions, determining the inverse of a function, and verifying inverse relationships. Complete with vocabulary, explanations, and worked examples.
Preview of Function Characteristics Presentation

Function Characteristics Presentation

This PowerPoint presentation is a concise introduction to the characteristics of a function for upper level math classes. Great for distance learning, you can walk students through the vocabulary and examples using any video presentation software (I prefer screencastify). Topics covered include: what constitutes a function, domain & range, extrema, continuity, and boundedness.
Preview of Quadratic Functions Review Activity

Quadratic Functions Review Activity

This activity is useful as a review for graphing and solving quadratic functions. Students are grouped and rotate to solve each of the problems one piece at a time. Each group must review the work previously done at each rotation, and then add the next step. This allows students to be exposed to different quadratic functions and allows them to make connections between the format of the functions, the solutions, the vertices, and the graphs. There are 6 stations and 7 groups. One group acts as as

All Things Limits Student Note-Taking Guide

This instructional material contains a comprehensive a student note taking guide. It covers continuity, limits by inspection, finding limits algebraically, and identifying vertical and horizontal asymptotes using limits. To be used with associated PPT presentation. *Introductory lesson-does not include L'Hospitals rule.

IB MYP Assessment - Criterion D Projectile Motion

This is an IB MYP (year 5) assessment for criterion D, real-life application. If at a non-MYP school, it works as a great project or class activity. Students complete a lab to demonstrate the properties of projectile motion in the context of quadratic functions. They then use their data to make predictions and justify the accuracy of their solutions. It makes for interesting conversation about the parameter of what solutions are acceptable in the context of real-life problems involving physics.
Preview of Graphing Systems of Equations - Cell Phone Costs

Graphing Systems of Equations - Cell Phone Costs

This is a common core activity for solving systems of equations through graphing. It also allows students to model linear equations from a table of values.

The Zombie Apocalypse - Exponential Regression

This is a hands-on activity to address standards F.LE.A.2 , F.BF.A.1a, F.LE.A.1, F.LE.B5 It will allow students to connect geometric sequences to exponential functions and develop an explicit formula from a table of values derived from the context of the problem.
