Fix Up Strategies make all the difference for struggling readers. These strategies give readers a place to begin when their comprehension breaks down and the text doesn’t make sense. The following 10 Fix Up Strategy clipboards were created with several small groups of struggling readers. As a first grade teacher, I designed the Reading Strategy Hand to help my students solve unknown words. Whenever they do not know a word they start with the thumb strategy and work through the strategies on each finger in order. After a while, students automatically know which strategy is on which finger and can use the strategies independently (without the paper or while reading by themselves).
