This is a supplemental activity to any Common Core Curriculum that teaches Mathematical Practice 3: Construct Viable Arguments and Critique the Reasoning of Others. This 4-step process will help students solve word problems in math. It helps students break down the problem so it is easier to understand.

This is a winter themed graphing project for K-2nd students. Students create a graph using stickers and then write questions that go with their graph. The questions are fill in the blank for beginning writers and to support your ELs. Students love using the stickers, making their graph and then "quizzing" their friends with the questions they write. This was created for a 1st grade classroom but could be used in K or 2nd depending on your class.

Students can use this decision map to determine the operation while solving a word problem. This has been so helpful for my students! Finally a clear, simple way to determine the operation!

Students can create an addition math story; draw a picture, write an equation and write the story in words. This supports new common core standards.
