This is a supplemental activity to any Common Core Curriculum that teaches Mathematical Practice 3: Construct Viable Arguments and Critique the Reasoning of Others. This 4-step process will help students solve word problems in math. It helps students break down the problem so it is easier to understand.

Student can create and use this flip book to learn about multiplication properties. Directions: 1) Get 12 x 19 piece of construction paper. 2) Fold each side so that the edges of the paper are in the center. 3) Cut out both pages of the property squares. 4) Glue title squares on the outside and glue definition squares on the inside. 5) On each square, write the definition of the property, a picture and an example. Students can use this decision map to determine the operation while solving a word problem. This has been so helpful for my students! Finally a clear, simple way to determine the operation!

This choice sheet is for students to keep track of activities completed each day for Daily 5: Read to Self, Word Work, Work on Writing, Listen to Reading, and Read with a Partner. The students simply color in or "x" the activities they completed. This scaffolds organization and planning for students.

Students can create an addition math story; draw a picture, write an equation and write the story in words. This supports new common core standards.
