About the store
This is my 15th year teaching. I graduated from Averett University in 2010 and I love how the small community allowed me to develop and grow. Without the community support, I wouldn't have been able to make it through college. This is why I am passionate about AVID, helping students develop that community now to get them through middle school and beyond!

HBCU One Pager

As an AVID 7 and 8 teacher, I love to introduce students to Historically Black Colleges and Universities throughout the year, but especially for Black History month. This assignment I have created takes me about 2-4 30 minute class times to complete. I show students some videos about HBCUs, they do some research with the document, then create their one pager on paper. You could allow them to create with a variety of digital tools as well. I am going to experiment with my free Canva pro account (

We did meeting 2 as our potluck and Valentine's celebration of our family love. There is homework for the girls to do to prepare for the potluck and meeting 2. Make sure you involve the parents at the end of meeting 1.

Use these Google Slides to help students realize their missteps when communicating with teachers. This presentation can be used with PearDeck to allow students to respond independently when drafting new versions of the 'bad emails.' All examples are real examples of how students have emailed teachers. Reflection is built in to have students think about how and why they should communicate professionally with their teachers.

College BINGO - School-wide fun!

Have your AVID students get to know more about their teachers and open the door to have more conversations about college. I used to use this as an introductory activity to have AVID students introduce themselves to their teachers in person. You can use it digitally too. Teachers could post clues or a short paragraph about their college experience and students need to go look to find the answers to the BINGO sheet. Maybe use it for a school-wide spirit week about college. Let me know how you us

Simple Book Project

This project was created out of the need to just have a simple and quick conclusion project to a book we read during distance learning. I am a math teacher, who now teaches AVID, so Language Arts isn't my jam. I created this project to be simple with many pathways for the students to choose the best option for them. I did not include a rubric because many different teachers could use this and be looking for different things. Personally, I basically look for their effort and creativity. I'm sure

Digital Name Tent

If you used to use a paper name tent, I created a digital version for starting the new school year! Get to know your student's personality and start relationship building. Students create a digital name tent to show you about them. Then, after class they leave a comment or question that you will respond to. You would be surprised what students ask and say when they are given the time and space. Get to know your students quickly!

Additional biographical information

I know teach an elective called AVID. AVID is about helping all students succeed regardless of race, socio-economic status, or gender. AVID is all about helping students "in the academic middle" to learn the skills to be successful in higher level classes to help them prepare for college and compete against other students who may have more resources than them.
