Avid about Teaching

As an AVID 7 and 8 teacher, I love to introduce students to Historically Black Colleges and Universities throughout the year, but especially for Black History month. This assignment I have created takes me about 2-4 30 minute class times to complete. I show students some videos about HBCUs, they do some research with the document, then create their one pager on paper. You could allow them to create with a variety of digital tools as well. This is for the My Family Story badge. I already chose some great options that flow together for you. My troop did this around out Valentine's Day party. We did meeting 2 as our potluck and Valentine's celebration of our family love. There is homework for the girls to do to prepare for the potluck and meeting 2. Make sure you involve the parents at the end of meeting 1.

Use these Google Slides to help students realize their missteps when communicating with teachers. This presentation can be used with PearDeck to allow students to respond independently when drafting new versions of the 'bad emails.' All examples are real examples of how students have emailed teachers. Reflection is built in to have students think about how and why they should communicate professionally with their teachers.

Have your AVID students get to know more about their teachers and open the door to have more conversations about college. I used to use this as an introductory activity to have AVID students introduce themselves to their teachers in person. You can use it digitally too. Teachers could post clues or a short paragraph about their college experience and students need to go look to find the answers to the BINGO sheet. This project was created out of the need to just have a simple and quick conclusion project to a book we read during distance learning. I am a math teacher, who now teaches AVID, so Language Arts isn't my jam. I created this project to be simple with many pathways for the students to choose the best option for them. If you used to use a paper name tent, I created a digital version for starting the new school year! Get to know your student's personality and start relationship building. Students create a digital name tent to show you about them. Then, after class they leave a comment or question that you will respond to. You would be surprised what students ask and say when they are given the time and space. Get to know your students quickly!

Use these slides to help build relational capacity and create community by using them in your synchronous classroom. These slides are intended to be used in a digital classroom with the PearDeck (Premium) add-on for Google Slides. Open your PearDeck add-on and use the draggable type slide to give each student a dot to drag to their choice of visual answer. When all students have responded, display the results to the students! You can also use these slides in a synchronous classroom with a whiteb
