About the store
This is my 15th year teaching. I graduated from Averett University in 2010 and I love how the small community allowed me to develop and grow. Without the community support, I wouldn't have been able to make it through college. This is why I am passionate about AVID, helping students develop that community now to get them through middle school and beyond!

TRF Guide for students

Are your elective students struggling with filling in a TRF on their own? Try providing this resource to help them navigate the steps and parts of the NEW 2020 TRF on their own. This guide includes REAL student work to help show them how to give them an example of how to show their thinking. I demonstrate how to complete TRFs in class, but my first-year college readiness elective students still struggle with how to complete all the steps on their own. I created this guide to give some suggestio

Emergency Sub Plans for Elective

I hope you find my sub plan activities quick, easy, and helpful. They are intended to be done completely digital. Therefore, in an emergency, your coworkers don’t have to scramble to find your copies or make copies of activities. While the Choice Board should take my 7th/8th graders a full 45 minutes (if not more) to complete, the AVID Virtual College Tour may not take that long. I would recommend supplementing with an article and asking students to write a summary.

HBCU One Pager

As an AVID 7 and 8 teacher, I love to introduce students to Historically Black Colleges and Universities throughout the year, but especially for Black History month. This assignment I have created takes me about 2-4 30 minute class times to complete. I show students some videos about HBCUs, they do some research with the document, then create their one pager on paper. You could allow them to create with a variety of digital tools as well. I am going to experiment with my free Canva pro account (

Tutorial Reflection

There are a lot of tutorial steps and ways to analyze the process, and I found a way to simplify them. I took portions from the Tutorial Scripting Form, ideas from the TRF reflection, and parts of a debrief and put them together. With only 45 minutes for tutorials, I had to rush to give as much time as possible to tutorials and I found this form more beneficial than the tutorial reflection questions or having students write a paragraph. The tutors also appreciate the form because it allows them

Use these Google Slides to help students realize their missteps when communicating with teachers. This presentation can be used with PearDeck to allow students to respond independently when drafting new versions of the 'bad emails.' All examples are real examples of how students have emailed teachers. Reflection is built in to have students think about how and why they should communicate professionally with their teachers.

College Schedule Project

What's a real life skill that you need for college that no one ever teaches you? Creating your schedule in college! While some colleges and universities have excellent faculty advisors, most students aren't aware of the complexity that comes with registering for college courses. This project also shows students the demands of being a college athlete. I have gathered information from division 1 and division 3 athletes to include in this project. This project is my students' favorite every year.

Wondering how you are going to run digital tutorials? This is my solution. I hope it helps you. 1. Students will complete a digital TRF and submit it in Google Classroom for a grade. 2. In online breakout rooms they will use this binder to be able to help each other. While the tutor is grading the TRFs in Google Classroom, they will each post their initial question, critical thinking, and Tutorial question (updated TRF now says this instead of POC) in the Tutorial Binder. I DO grade the research, planning, and reflections. If you are an AVID teacher, I also used the Backwards Planning Map to help students with this project (which was th
