A simple sheet for recording the types of characterization used in any short story or novel.

This is a three part pretest that I use at the begining of the school year for my 6/7 combined reading class. They learn about the different genres of literature for the first three weeks and then spend the rest of the year studying books of different genres in literature circles.

These are materials to use with the first chapter of The Greatest; Muhammad Ali by Walter Dean Myers. Included are a vocabulary list, fill in the blank vocabulary notes, a review crossword, a sequencing activity sheet, a grammar activity, and a quiz, and a word wall.

In my 6/7 reading class, we do a variety of literature circles studying various genres. For our realistic fiction literature circle they read books with the theme of animals (Because of Winn Dixie, Charlie's Raven, Rascal, Shiloh). A simple crossword puzzle for students to complete after reading Walt Whitman's biography on Biography.com. For struggling students, I read the biography aloud in a small group and ask them to underline key words on their own printed copies.

This is the easier version of the examples of characterization graphic organizer. I teacher characterization in literature circles, so these are easily adaptable to any text and they seem to work pretty well.

This package includes five reading check points that asks students to draw conclusions from the text and support them with specific details. There are also handouts for students to keep track of rules in Jonas's community and characterization throughout the novel. Finally, there is a menu of assessments so students can differential their final projects by choice.

This goes with all the other stuff for my realistic fiction literature circle unit on the theme of animals. The text to text and text to world binders that are referred to are literally binders full of matters such as other texts that are related or recent articles and news stories. The kids love this unit and the 100 points is their favorite part because I don't tell them what they have to do. They get really creative.

This collection of handouts for "The All American Slurp" by Lensey Namioka includes a ten word vocabulary list, skeleton notes for recording vocabulary, a comprehension worksheet requiring students to make connections and comparisons, a word wall, a vocabulary review, and a short quiz.

These handouts are to use with the short story "All Summer in a Day" by Ray Bradbury. Students are asked to analyze three parts of setting, time, location, and weather. The handouts include a vocabulary list, skeleton vocabulary notes, two graphic organizers, comprehension questions, a figurative language activity, a vocabulary review and a quiz.

I teach characterization in literature circles so I needed a graphic organizer that could work for any text. This seems to do the job. I also have another worksheet about characterization of a character (creatively called characterization worksheet)that is easier for kids who are struggling with the concept. For my most advanced kids I make this sheet two sided and ask them to chose the main character and then another character that is not as important so that they really have to sift through

This is a quick and easy vocabulary review activity. You can write vocabulary words in the word box before photocopying or project words for students to add themselves.

My students each have a reading bingo sheet and they get a prize (that they decide on at the beginning of the year, this year they get to have a soda in class) for each bingo. I also have a blown up version on the wall that we fill out as a whole class and when they get a black out we have a party. It helps students motivate eachother to read and branch out to different genres of literature.

This is a super fun way to introduce prepositions. My high school students loved it.

This is a fun anchoring activity for middle schoolers. I have my students brainstorm different rewards for completing a bingo and then we vote on two to three options. I also have a larger, laminated version on display and students get a party when we achieve a blackout. They really enjoy it and motivate each other so that they can have a party.
